Aloha MAUI and fellow expressed artists and Visionaries of the World:
We have extended a warm welcome and invitation to you all to come share art, healing, music, food, performance and self-expression with us on a blank canvas called the Keanae Peninsula starting February 17th, 2012.
Last year the event sold out again at the gate. This year we made a decision that there would be no sales at the gate and no day passes offered. The reason for this is that the entire vibe is raised when we are all in this together for four days sharing our gifts. Something magical happens when everyone is together riding the complete arch of SOURCE from beginning with the creation, to gifting and expressing all the way through to leaving no trace at the end. The two single events at SOURCE where all action stops are the opening and closing circles. We believe that all of our experience is enhanced and completed with the full festival experience.
However, in recent weeks many voices have spoken out in person, facebook and this blog with the desire for DAY PASSES. We’ve heard stories of parents visiting, work which won’t budge, affordability of a full pass, and simply put, a hesitancy about committing, among a number of others. Just as we hold the other core values of SOURCE, we seek to embrace the island of Maui, listen and adapt. In the spirit of inclusion, and of sharing this with everyone, we want to hear from you.
So, we put this out to the community at large: How do you feel about Day Passes to SOURCE? Please share your opinion in the comments below. We will take every comment into consideration– well expressed opinions will have more credence than simple votes.
And one final note: Full memberships are available for purchase online as well as island locations where the current price is $180. Tomorrow, February 1, the price goes to $200. The last place and time to purchase membership (which includes your ticket, the full festival pass) in person for $180 will be at the Fundraiser “Our Beats are Broken” at Casanova’s on Thursday.
Thank you, please share your thoughts on DAY PASSES below.

if it is going to be a sell out again then i vote for NO day passes. i like the idea of having one group for the entirety and simplifying the gate and parking. if the decision is made to offer day passes then i suggest they be priced high to encourage full membership. mahalo source!
My experiences with SOURCE started with serving Heather during a Day Pass. It was muddy as hell and we couldn’t get to all the places but from that brief exposure I wanted more! I missed 2010 but got blessed to be a part of 2011! Again I wanted more… KNEW that this is The WAY we all seek to live! YES to DAY PASSES!
It seems that day passes would be a good thing, you would have to find a good way to enforce them, we decided to get full passes but i would hate for crew to want to come hang and be part of the experience and not be able to…… thanks for your possibilities Blog god!
Looking at this from different points, first off: security. Security does an amazing job of keeping us safe. Their job is diffulcult enough, we really should not add more stuff for them to do. If we have day passes, security now has to go through the festival searching for people wit different braclets, to make sure they are leaving at the right time! Second: parking. Parking is already one of our most difficult things to accomplish at source, by havin day passes, we’re asking parking/shuttle crew to work three or four times harder to accomadate all da extra people. Third: kitchen, da kitchen cooks and prepares food based off of tickets sales, adding more people on a daylie basis makes meals longer. Cause after a certain ammount has been cooked and served, more must be made for the people that were not accounted for. This will be my 5th source, we’ve always done deez passes, and the thought of all tickets being pre-sold, makes prep seem a lot easier, it will give everyone more of an opptunity to enjoy da festival. I am opposed to day passes!
I personally have mixed feelings about Day Passes. Mr. Poe hit all the elements that make Day Passes difficult to enforce and a general pain in the butt to deal with. However, some people are simply not ready for 4 days of immersive experience. Perhaps they can only get a day or two off to come out and play. I don’t want to disqualify people simply because they don’t have the flexibility in work schedule that I have.
That being said, Day Passes ideally would be sold before the festival, at a higher price, and with clear identifying brightly colored bracelet (distinguishing it from the committed festivalers).
The bottom line is: in order to make up any difference in available accommodations and breaking even financially, Day Passes may be a necessity and in my opinion will inspire future attendees to jump in 100% with us in future festivals. We are very close to being able to sell out the festival well before February. Let’s make it available to fresh blood while we can.
Perhaps a “hotline” or dedicated webpage will provide the forum for sales, rather than dealing with physical ticket outlets. Day Passers would have a specific window (Sat 9am- Sun 9am) they can use their pass within. Hospitality can handle receiving the Day Passers and getting them their proper bracelet. Cool Heads can assist with scanning the grounds for Day Passers overstaying their welcome, particularly during the 9am “transition” period.
My two cents. Love you guys!
One other point. Can the Day Pass bracelets have a particular day (Fri, Sat, etc) stamped on them to make them easily distinguishable? Perhaps we can do that on site with a permanent marker?
Thank you for opening this up for discussion to the general public! I know not everyone can make the meetings, its good to hear the needs and desires of those who aren’t as accessible during these kinds of decision making proccesses.
For me, SOURCE is much more than just a four (or one!) day festival. Its a community first, and a family. Second its an opportunity- to share, teach, learn, grow, and challenge yourself. SOURCE is NOT a spectator event. It was created with the mindset that each and every person with a membership is a participant. I believe that the absence of day passes allows for more participation and solidarity within the community. Speaking soley in terms of the “spirit” of SOURCE I am opposed to day passes. It doesn’t seem to me that one could really capture the true essence of what SOURCE is in just one day, nor could one allow themselves to channel their deepest creativity in just one day…
All that being said, if “the goal” is to sell out, idk if that is attainable without day passes. Personally. I would love to not sell out and have a more intimate gathering, but financially I’m not sure that’s feasible.
Aloha kakou–
1st choice: we sell out on memberships
2nd choice: we offer day passes @ $100 (color-coded), good noon Sat./noon Sun., but these MUST be bought on line and by a cutoff date early enough for the culinary team to integrate; parking with shuttle only

I vote YES on day passes sold BEFORE the event (not at the gate) if nothing else but to allow new people (like me) a chance to have a “taste” of the experience. Last year I was only there for one day & this year, well, a whole different story!!! I can appreciate the logistical hassles, but I may never have had the Source family experience without day passes & I’m very grateful! xoxo
I would be happy to trade my full pass for a couple day passes. I will NOT be spending the night and have tons of commitments away from Source. However, I would like to visit for some portion of the event… and see the art/performance pieces I and others have created.
Thank you everyone who has commented. I suppose it’s common sense that most of the comments are from long time SOURCErs- I’d really love to hear from some people who have not been to the festival before.
My vote is for day passes! It’s more inclusive, which seems to be what Source is all about! We purchased full passes even though we will probably only be able to commit for 2 days…. Cheers and look forward to the magic!
I was gravitated to a SOURCE flier today. I have never been to, nor heard of the festival before. I was really really excited to see the flier because the event sounded awesome. When I got on the website I was bummed out to see that I would have to commit to all four days in order to attend. I’m still in the process of making Maui my home, having come over here for work about a year ago, and finding this flier is one of the most awesome things I’ve discovered since I’ve been here, and the disappointment that it was not available for a shorter/cheaper visit is one of the biggest bummers I’ve felt. I am very passionate about the arts and would like to learn more about healing while I’m living here as well. I would love to be able to come by for a shorter stay.
I was also really excited to see the flier once I picked it up because it happens to be during the stay of my first mainland visitors to Maui since I have lived here. That being said, they will only be here for four days and it will be there first time here so I honestly would feel bad keeping them in one place for their entire stay. I know that plays into the whole “spectator” notion, but observation is the key to the uninformed and uninlightened becoming informed and inlightened.
Might I offer the following suggestions:
1) As the two central events of the festival are the opening and closing circles, only make day passes available for opening day and closing day. This allows for further intimacy and bonding for core and committed members over the weekend. This would minimize the extra work for security as it would only be clearing out day passers after the first day.
2) Make food only available to day passers through additional purchase. These meals could even be different meals from the ones prepared by the cuisine team, like brown bag lunches with simple sandwiches and snacks. You could avoid any problems of over preparing brown bags by allowing them for purchase to anyone throughout the day as well. That way any leftovers would potentially be purchased in between meals or late night by anybody that just needs a pick-me-up. This would allow for another opportunity to generate funds while also not changing the expectations on the kitchen prepared meals, which would only be availble with week passes. Part of my thinking here too is that the community meal atmosphere and energy in a warm meal will likely not be within the expectaions of those that are not camping long term and just visiting for the day.
These are just thoughts from someone new and completely naive to the event. The fact that this forum is even set-up to be open to such feedback does boast well for the community atmosphere SOURCE seems to be about. Thank you all for being dedicated and proactive people and also for your time.

I understand and agree with the idea of creating a bubble where everyone is involved through the entire experience, therefore deepening and really getting into it. However, the reality is that not everyone is able or wants to commit to the whole four days and excluding these people not only excludes them from the experience but excludes us from experiencing them and what they may bring to the festival for their short visit, whether it is a profound experience, information sharing, performance, or even fresh eyes and excitement. By not offering day passes, we would also miss out on bringing in new people who just want to check it out and then would fully commit in the years to come.
The issues mentioned seem to be resolvable with organization. Sell the day passes in advance only so there is a head count for the kitchen. Offer day passes only for one or two of the days. Involve everyone in keeping tabs on bracelets. It’s been done in the past.
I am all about inclusion and sharing and by not offering day passes it feels like this festival is moving in an exclusive direction. I vote to keep the Aloha Spirit and offer day passes.
I love the idea (and practice) of attending festivals for one full day or one half day and a half night….and for me, thats great and enough….I have many many friends who love to play together for days and days in a festival or adventure type setting….and I have a few friends who are more like me and want to participate, but will choose not to if the only option is several days vs. one day.
I hope the day passes survive for this years Source so that everyone can experience The Circus of Dreams in their own style !!!
Thank you all so much for your feedback. We’ve been convinced here and offline as well by a number of people who have been to SOURCE and others who want to come for their first time that offering day passes will enhance all of our experience. For folks who have never been, this is a chance to find out first hand what the magic of a gift economy creates. We will be offering a very limited number of day passes. At noon on Monday a link to buy a day pass will be posted on the purchase membership page of the website. The price will be $80 and they likely will sell fast. We are still on pace to sell out the festival so please be forewarned, this is your chance. Please share this information with your friends. Limited day passes go live Monday at noon.

I purchased a ticket. Gonna be fun. I went the full weekend a couple years ago. It was a blast. Only single complaint I had was with security. When it got late into the AM, 2 or 3 A.M., the security let in local people from Hana. They were eyeballing people and looking for fights. There weren’t any fights, but if you know the vibe, you know how to avoid avoid the confrontation. Hopefully the security won’t allow early morning riff raff in this year. It was just a strange feeling. But you can’t feel free forever. It wouldn’t be natural.
