Survival Guide MUST READ

If you are attending SOURCE this year, it is to your benefit and those around you that you read carefully the following SOURCE Survival Guide

Surviving Source 2012

Perhaps the single largest factor in surviving Source with ease and grace is attitude.  We are co-creating our own microcosm, our own reality. There are no spectators at the Source- we, the attendees ARE the event! If you were with us last year, and there were things you thought could be done better, by all means, please do it! Be the change you wish to see….Radical self-reliance, radical self-expression.

Membership (TICKETS)

RAIN GEAR!

It rains at Camp Keanae. Sometimes it rains and rains, for days and days. Last year we were graced with beautiful weather. This year, we are hoping for the best and planning for the worst. Ponchos, slickers, galoshes, umbrellas, plastic garbage bags, inflatable canoes…all of these are in order (well, maybe not the canoe)

waterproof your body

waterproof your feet

waterproof your art/creative contributions

waterproof your gear

waterproof your sleeping space

ACCOMMODATIONS

Keanae has a limited number of bunk spaces. There is also space for camping. Showers and toilets are available; bring your own towel and toiletries.

If you choose to bunk:

Bedding; Sleeping bags, pillows, blankets…Whatever will make you feel cozy in your dry but extra festive bunk bed. There are a limited amount of beds available, on a first come, first served basis. Ear plugs might be a consideration- not everyone will want to sleep when you do.

If you choose to camp:

Consider that there is a possibility that you will be camping for four days in the pouring rain. We recommend that you put your tarp INSIDE the tent. Put things that you want to stay dry in plastic bags. Use your rain fly, and consider using an additional tarp for extra protection. Place plastic bottles or tennis balls on top of rebar stakes- these can be a dangerous hazard, especially at night and when camping is crowded. Weather-proof and water-proof!

FOOD

Source has a fabulous meal plan in store for you… see the Food at Source section of our website for details. We will be serving two meals per day that are primarily vegan and gluten free. There will also be snacks — please refer to Food section for more details.  If you want to have three meals, you are a picky eateror have strict dietary needs that the kitchen cannot accommodate, or you tend to need to snack often, we suggest that you bring your own food.

WATER

Source has an ample supply of drinking water. We require that you bring your own water container.

PARTICIPATION

There are no spectators at Source- we, the attendees, ARE the event! We ask that you come with an open mind, and a positive attitude. YOUR CREATIVE FLAIR IS WELCOME!

Are you an artist? Contact art@sourcemaui.com, to arrange to participate in hanging your and others. Do not expect that you can drop off artwork. It is your responsibility to see that it is displayed and there are not guarantees that a space will be available. The earlier you are involved the better.

Don’t know how to help, what to bring, share, perform or cook? Contact our participation coordinator at participate@sourcemaui.com.

Costumes are practically mandatory, and so, so encouraged. This is your opportunity to let your inner child come out and play… who do you want to be? What does the “free-est,” highest, goofiest, hottest or truest version of yourself dress like?

Art, drums, musical instruments, props, banners, signs, flags, decorative lighting, blink-ies, glow-ies and other things to decorate and light yourself, your space, and your friends add to the fun. SOURCE is about radical self expression, so by all means, express yourself!

PROHIBITED ITEMS

*In accordance with state and local law and the policy of the YMCA, all illegal drugs and alcohol are prohibited

*Fireworks or explosives of any kind.

*Charcoal grills (White Gas/Propane is ok)

*Weapons

*Bad and/or elitist attitudes

*Any pets

*Vending – any type of vending will NOT be tolerated

*MOOP (Matter Out Of Place)- Anything that will break up and/or blow away in the wind (confetti, loose paper, feathers, etc)

COMMON SENSE

*Be respectful of those whose idea of radical self expression may not be as radical as yours. There will be children at this event, as well as a wide variety of people.

*Respect your fellow Sourcers and their stuff. Vandalism and thievery just suck, and are NOT part of the Source vibe. Treat folks the way you want to be treated…need we say more?

*Be sure to secure any loose items before leaving your camp. Camp Keanae is situated on land with cliffs overlooking the ocean. Please control your trash, especially cigarette butts, as everything that blows off the land stands a good chance of ending up deeply lodged in the stomach of one of our beloved green sea turtles.

*Be prepared to take care of yourself! Remember necessary medications, sunscreen, mosquito repellant- whatever your special needs may be. Drink plenty of water while at the event, and practice harm reduction.

YOU GOTTA HAVE

-a water container

-a ticket

-appropriate clothing

-bedding

-a light of some kind

-a positive vibe

MAY WE SUGGEST YOU BRING

*Gifts for giving to new friends

*Flashlight, headlamp, cool neon, anything else to light yourself and your way—the moon will be only a quarter full this year for SOURCE… and rechargeable batteries! (Disposable batteries are so 2003, you know?)

*Costumes (we know you won’t forget)! decorative lighting, lots of blinkies and other things to decorate and light yourself.

*Art, musical instruments, props, banners, signs, and anything else you can think of that might make the experience more fun for all

*Camping gear- especially if you want privacy! Make sure it’s waterproof. Tents and tarps need to be free-standing. Consider a few large garbage bags to protect your gear from your leaking tent and possible water flow coming in through the floor. A good idea is to set a tarp down as a groundcloth inside the tent

*Shade structures, umbrellas, parasols, sheets, canopy, tarps, tent, parachute; something to break the strong mid-day sun and/ or rain

*Plastic bottles or tennis balls to top and protect dangerous rebar stakes or other hazards

*Appropriate clothing: light clothes for during the day, warmer clothing for at night. Rain, gear, rain gear, rain gear

*A wide brim hat

*Raingear!! Again, this might include large garbage bags for the gear in your leaky tent

*An extra tarp

*Earplugs (if you’re a light sleeper)

*Watertight protective bags (e.g. heavy zip-type) for cameras or electronic gear

*Garbage bags – leave no trace!

*Any prescription medications, contact lens supplies (disposables work great), and whatever else you need to maintain your health and comfort in a remote area with no services

*Sunscreen lotion, lipbalm, sunhat and sunglasses

*Solid sandals or close-toed shoes and flip flops. Some spaces are shoe-free

*First aid kit

*Insect repellent

*Portable chairs

*Coolers full of your favorite libations (no alcohol)
