SOURCE 4 art grants awarded

The SOURCE interactive arts foundation has granted a total of $1400 to the following art projects that will be brought to the festival at Camp Keanae February 18-21, 2011. Each artist has created their work as a gift to the community. The grant will not pay for the entire project however, we hope it is significant in covering some of the costs as well as big vote of support and thanks for these important contributions to our experience. In 2011, we are also very excited to announce that we are getting closer and closer to fulfilling one of our goals- that SOURCE becomes a successful incubator for public art on Maui.

The Temple is funded out of the SOURCE infrastructure and is described here.

Power Sails
Electrifying Source Maui with Clean Energy
Power SailsElectrifying Source Maui with Clean Energy

Physical Description: The power-sail is a new portable wind turbine system that charges batteries with clean electricity. Kite-like sails lift small wind turbines to higher altitude where stronger and more consistent winds prevail. The power-sail is an interactive wind power system that reduces the burning of fossil fuel. Go fly a kite and help the world with clean energy.

Flight: The power-sail generates 12 to 20 volts that can be used to charge most 12 volt batteries. The power sail flies from a 200 foot long tether in 10 to 25 mph winds. If the wind drops below 10 mph the two sails will slowly come down to rest on the ground.
Retrieval: Use one hand to grasp the tether and slowly walk down wind allowing the tether to slide through your hand. Bring both sails back to the power base and remove the 3 stakes. Remove the push pins, roll up the sails, coil the tethers and stow everything in the carrying case.
Philosophical Statement:
The interactive power-sail operation at Source Maui 2011 will show how harnessing high altitude wind can generate clean electricity and charge batteries. The Source Maui demonstration will be a perfect stepping stone for larger events. The power-sail is safe and flies like a traditional kite in 10 to 25 mph winds.
In 2003, I woke up with a dream to develop an automatic kite-sail control system for boats. After years of building, testing and trying to start a kite boat business, I realized that operating a kite from a boat was too problematic for most marine vessels. I recently changed course to developing new land based power-sails. I look forward to my 1st demonstration at Source Maui 2011, Yay.

Water screen slip’n'slide..
Johnny Bubbles

I have built two water screens . one for source 2. I spent $350.00 the second for source 3. I added another $250.00 worth of parts. total $600.00 plus about 30 hours of tinkering….I am submitting.. if I get some $$ I will bring it back as a “slip’n'slide”..
I need to purchase some plastic , some more flex hose, and reconfigure the reservior .
Imagine seeing the stunning effect of psychedelic visuals projected onto water “scrim” that you can walk or slide-dive through.. It will be 20 feet long. on a very tiny slope of
<1: 20 rise over run.
Totally interactive. instead of a trough.. water will collect into the plastic, and send water back up to the screen. it will be “OPEN” during peak evening hours for everyone to use..very low impact kid and adult safe design. It will recycle all of it’s water, and lose far less than previous designs..

Jumping laminar jet Rainbow fountains.
Johnny Bubbles

Three pools (stock tanks); each sending a 12 foot arc of water, (that will resemble rainbow fiber optics) into the next. pool. they will be aranged in a triangle and allow participants to walk under them.. ( Gabe mott and I may collaborate.. if the design is right, then I can place one at each of the three points of the color triangle (formerly the color box.))
Wicked cool.. Either way it will dazzle. Each will have color changing LED’s for a truly novel effect The cost so far i.e. money I have put out $525.00 Build time for each 12 hours.
Interactivity.. you can use a remote to change the colors. as well as inerupting the flow to give the impression of jumping arcs of light..This is such a pretty effect I fell in love instantly.

Camp Canonball
Chris Taylor
Download Proposal

Ahoy there mateys! This year for source I am building an interactive pirate ship mast complete with crows nest and climbable rigging. I am seeking partial funding of $200 in order to bring this multiyear art project to Source.

The Pirate Ship Mast installation is the rally point and heart of Camp Cannonball. This will serve as a central location to launch raiding parties and treasure hunts.

The installation is interactive. there will be two climbable rope ladders and crows nest that will fit approximately 3 people. A treasure map will be posted on the mast indicating where the booty is hidden. Eyepatches and temporary pirate tattoos will be available for anyone who feels a bit piratical.

The piece will have a bold visual impact as it will stand approximately 14 feet tall and be flying a black flag. The piece will be informational and break the stereotype of pirates as something to fear. Pirates are people who when wronged by the pervasive capitalistic mentality chose to make life more equitable and demand the freedom of expression.

I have a background in technology and have overseen projects with 2-3people crews. Previously set up several events related to sustainability and saw their successful completion through. I have several people with construction, festival organizing and engineering backgrounds working on the project as consultants and builders. For source 2009 we brought a small pirate camp out which included a walkable plank and pool and large pirate flag to inspire a piratical nature.

I believe we would represent one of only a couple theme camps at this year’s Source festival and in an effort to encourage community involvement we are bringing this component that can be expanded on year after year.

Materials are estimated to cost around $700 and a breakdown of materials cost is included.

We are asking for a partial funding grant of $200 to make Camp Cannonball a reality.

Sincerely,

Chris “pirate” Taylor

New York Art Scene: Video Gallery Installation of various artists

Hello dear Source members,
I have attached several documents, one of which is my application for the grant itself and the others are forms which the artists have returned to me which describe more about the specific works they are contributing to Source 2011.  We are all very excited to participate and everyone wishes they could make it but New Yorkers have a lot of plans and commitments and they just don’t pick up and fly to Hawaii as easily as a crazy bird as myself would.  I’d like to add that I am still waiting on some information from the artist’s Brian Close and Jessica Findley- more specifically their artist statements and a more detailed description of Brian’s video piece which he is making as we speak just for Source 2011.  After I receive all necessary information I will compose a press release for this show within the show that you may wish to add to your website,
Thank you for your time, effort and generosity in advance!  Looking forward to joining you.

Puppet Station
Zach Yamasaki

Interactive art project which may erupt into many performances.   Area where  individuals and groups are assisted in the process of making puppets and staging.  The intention being that anyone who participates can make a puppet that they can take home at the end of the event.  In the meantime, the puppets will remain at the project site to be used by anyone.  This allows everyone a chance to do what they feel comfortable with, whether it’s creating a puppet, writing a script, stage design or performance.  This covers all the bases of interactive art.
Materials will include glue guns, felt, fabric, googley eyes, paint, brushes, glitter, cardboard, etc.
I propose to bring most of the material myself, and am requesting funds for airfare, paints, and brushes.

4 Directions
Anne Provost
I’m doing this installation…need two more drop cloth canvases 9×12 and 6×9 (already have 9×12 ‘water’ finished and have one 6×9 canvas from Home Depot $10) need 30 sheets of paper in each sacred colors of red, black, yellow, white(no problem) and want to stencil a symbol on opposite side to represent the season that goes with the color. Laminating them would help them survive the weather and use by participants. I have a basket to put them all in at the center of the circle. The banners need to be supported to bamboo poles or rebar? (I used grommets and strung rope through the top). Let me know if you still feel this is worthy to try and do or if I should put my energy helping others… more later when I’m not so scattered and
jet lagged. Hugs Annie

4d Tesseract
Ben Holt

The first of hopefully three tesseracts has been built.  it is 8.5′ tall and cost roughly 90 dollars in wood and fasteners.  was completed by the generosity of many builders lending tools and the grace of one builder who devoted his day to it.

The next one will hopefully be made of steel and possibly much larger.  it will cost 230$ for materials and hardware and will be fabricated tomorrow.  this one will have a three or four man team and will have been aided by the hands of many more.

None of them have been painted to glow as of yet.

I anticipate spending 30$ on paint

Mounting/anchoring hardware will be recycled from other projects

I am seeking an art grant to cover any of this project’s 340$ materials cost.

The tesseracts are in keeping with the year’s theme as four dimensional cubes.  albeit represented in 3d.
They are mildly interactive in that they display interesting shapes and symmetries from a variety of angles and will invite the viewer to walk around them in order to witness theunfolding symmetries.

I believe they will delight and intrigue the sourcers from up close and from a distance and will add to the overall source sculpture garden.

A Color Box
Gabriel Mott

“My son and I were transported to an interactive display of light, color, and sound. Fascinated, he danced with his shadow on the screen for almost an hour.”
-Shawna Gordon

“A colorbox has been the most interactive of arts at source, mystifying and inspiring and helping to slowly spread an understanding of how we see color and of the relative and fleeting nature of our perceptions.”
-Ben Holt

“By using a bionic Barbie doll with an infrared light in her third eye, one can merge colors to to see their “children” or experience the relationship of two colors floating around on four walls of a giant cube. It is a beautiful piece of art to encounter in the night.”
-Carey Cudra

“The color box power supply had ensnared me and played awesome mind blowing netherworldly fascinating tricks. ”
-Joseph Alivero

Giant Moon Ball Projection
Doug Deboer

My idea is this:I can get a 5 ft giant white beach ball for $75, or a 7ft giant white beach ball for $125.As you know I am a projection artist, and projecting on a high, supended ball is AMAZING!I’ve seen this done before, and the projection goes through to the other side too, like rear projection.I wanted to hang this ball up high outside somewhere, perhaps between the Gym and the buildings directly across from the Gym door, where everyone walks.

I was going to come up with all kinds of original content that keeps changing on the ball.I believe my proposed content will make people laugh, be introspective, puzzled, freaked out, and thing very deeply. 1. Man on the moon…you know, like the old time movie of the face on the moon where the rocket ship goes through the eye?Well, I could film expressive faces and make them into the moon with special effects, sort of like this shot. Or… why not just a dancing monkey for a bit… I have lots of weird stuff. 2. I could project a spinning UFO, or other strange and fun alien stuff (everything intersperced with the Source Logo of course). 3.I have so much content I could put on the Globe, like sacred mandalas or a spinning Myan Calendar…my imagination runs wild… trust me, the content would be mesmerising and cool, and this could convey important info, even poems and saying too.The sky is the limit, and I’m all ears for cool ideas.

Fire Garden
Blaze

Every festival participant will have the choice to come through the portals and passages of the fire garden. The garden will provide ambiance, form, and chill space throughout the gathering. People feel transformed when passing through the portal into the next level of their evolution. My piece will be interactive with the SOURCE logos, the fire team and used in the SOURCE Ceremony. It will affect people by providing an opportunity for participants to actually engage and be with the fire as they pass through the the portal and other garden fire displays such as Pele’s Cauldron, the Fire Pole, and the Fire Dance areas.
My background is I’ve been a Source participant since the first year, and I’ve been working with fire for over 20 years.
Two of the last three years I have produced this art piece at SOURCE successfully and followed through on showing up with everything I needed for the presentation. I also cleaned up the area thoroughly after I was done.

What is novel about this art piece is the garden is beautiful night and day with flowers and altars, fire and form. Floral arches and displays by day and fire and rope light arches and displays by night sets a space. When the portal bursts in flames and our guests pass through the portal it’s quite audacious, definitely daring and bold. This art piece is growing with the Source event.
This presentation is approximately 1000 square feet.
People comment that this is a very impressive exhibit. Most of the Source people have seen, experienced, and enjoyed this beautiful garden in previous years.

4 Love and 4 Beauty.

The Matrix
Gabriel Mott
Taking Jacob Liberman narration and my color matrix animation work, I will create an experience where Jacob’s voice opens people to the mystical power of color to transform while excersicing their eyes such that they begin to see thru colors.
On a  monitor is playing an animation of background colors changing behind a matrix of colors. The matrix of colors make up the choice of background colors. The slow changing of background fatigue the eyes into seeing an intense level of transparency that doesn’t exist.
What it looks like:
One large monitor with color display
One pair headphones
Audio on headphones of Jacob Liberman, author “Light Medicine”
